Suspected KKK image found in Oklahoma third grader's school bag after Valentine's Day party leads to investigation by district officials

Over the weekend Hate Trackers opened an investigation into an incident on February 15, 2019, at the Sunset Elementary School in Edmond, Oklahoma, after being directed to a Facebook post claiming an 8-year-old girl had found a paper image of the Ku Klux Klan (seen in photo above) inside her bag at the school's Valentine's Day party.

Chastae Collins, a licensed nurse, published the photo on Facebook and posted "This was given to my 8 year old cousin in her bag at her schools Valentine's day party at an Edmond elementary school. This hurts me so bad. Everyone loves black culture, slang, and our way of life but THIS is really our life, this is what we deal with DAILY!! This is why we kneel!!!! This was LEARNED! This is why we are angry! Just because slavery is over doesn't mean there isn't physical, verbal, mental, and emotional abuse. This world we live in is full of unnecessary hate all because of our skin!"

When contacted last night, Collins said "The parents are awaiting investigation with the school before we move any further. I will not be answering any questions. Thank you for your concerns and for reaching out to me."

Susan Parks-Schlepp, the Public Information Officer/Director of Community Engagement for the school system, contacted us today to respond to our inquiry about the event.

She provided the following statement:

"Edmond Public Schools has been informed of a report that a paper figure, purported to represent the Ku Klux Klan, was given to an African-American student at Sunset Elementary School on Friday, Feb. 15. To date, officials are only aware of a single student who received such an image. Further, school
officials do not believe the paper image was given as a “Valentine.” School officials have been in communication with the parents of the student who received the paper image as well as the student who created the image. The student who created the image did not bring Valentines to school to share with fellow students on Feb. 15.

"Based upon the information known at this time, it is not clear what the paper figure is, whether it was intended as a racial or discriminatory act, or whether it was intended to represent the Ku Klux Klan. All of this information will be confirmed through an ongoing investigation.

"Edmond Public Schools prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, disability, religion and race, and complies with all federal and state civil rights laws. If it is determined that the paper figure was intended to harass or discriminate against another student, then appropriate action will be taken as required by District policy."

Hate Trackers will continue monitoring this incident for future developments.
